With the start of the new season here in Oz, everyone is super excited about the impending Summer.

"But Summer means bikinis!!!" I hear people cry.

Never fear Vegie Heads, we are all in this together, and together we shall share knowledge, encourage and support one another, and come Summer, we shall be GLOWING from head to toe!

First things first......

What is a detox?
Detox, short for detoxification, is the body's natural, ongoing process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body.*

What are toxins and why are they in my body?
Toxins are anything that can potentially harm body tissue, including waste products that result from normal cell activity, such as ammonia, lactic acid and homocysteine, and human-made toxins that we are exposed to in our environment, food, and water.*

How does my body remove them?
The liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood and lymphatic systems work together to ensure that toxins are transformed chemically to less harmful compounds and excreted from the body.*

A lot of people focus so much on removing things from their diet, that they forget about things they should be ADDING to their diet.

How many times have you said, or heard someone say "I'm removing coffee, bread and sugar from my diet". And how long has it lasted? I'm guessing not very long.

It's all psychological.

If we are focusing on things we cannot eat, we tend to crave them more than if we knew we could eat them

To put it simply, don't look at a detox as deprivation- look at it as ABUNDANT REJUVENATION.

There are plenty of detox diets out there, supplements you can take to help, and foods to avoid. There are books, websites and DVDs devoted to the subject.

I like to keep it simple though. I have followed this detox many times, and just love it:.

http://www.therawdivas.com/free-7-day-raw-food-detox

It's completely free, all you do is sign up and they send you emails everyday to motivate, inspire and encourage.

To start with, its best to prep your body for change, and doing a three day green smoothie cleanse is super easy and tasty.

I am a green smoothie addict, and have been for a long time. Before I invested in my Thermomix, I was drinking thick, gluggy green smoothies....

.now however they are easy
to drink and digest. Invest in a good blender, it will make all the difference!

Green smoothies are not as gross as they sound- in actual fact they are delicious, and the ingredient possibilities are endless!

Beginners green smoothie:

-2 cups of organic baby spinach
-1 banana
-1/2 cup frozen berries
-2 cups of purified water

Blend together and slurp!

You will notice an amazing difference in your health;

-you will be going to the toilet (and more regularly than ever before!)
-your skin with glow with health and clear up
-your eyes will be brighter
-your breath fresher
-your gums healthier
-your PMS and blood sugar levels stablised
-your weight stabilised
plus many more wonderful changes!

Have a look at the Queen of Green: Victoria Boutenko's website:

http://www.rawfamily.com/

and also, my very good friend Kristine's website:

http://greensmoothiecommunity.com/

(and she will have a book out very soon...."The Green Smoothie Bible"!!)

Anyway, back to our detox....So in preparing your body for any detox, you should be drinking plenty of water, resting, gently exercising, and KEEP AN OPEN MIND!

I like to look at detox's seasonally: we are now in Spring, so load up on heaps of gorgeous, fresh produce, like:

:FRUITS
Apples, Lady Williams
Strawberries
Grapefruit
Lemons
Mandarins
Honey murcot
Melons
Oranges, Blood, Seville
Papaya
Pawpaw
Pineapple
Pomelo
Tangelos

VEGETABLES
Artichokes
Asian greens
Asparagus
Beans, Broad, Green
Beetroot
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower
Chillies
Garlic, fresh
Lettuce
Mushrooms
Onions, Spring, Green
Peas
Potatoes
Silverbeet
Spinach

By eating more of the above fruit and vegies, you will be automatically assisting the body with its Spring clean.

Some guidelines to follow:
-Reduce starchy foods (carbohydrates) to a minimum
-Eat reasonable amounts of plant based protein
-Eat large amounts of vegetables
-Eat a large proportion of those vegetables raw or in blended juices
-Eat plenty of raw fruit
-Use cold pressed olive oil to dress salads (it's green, not yellow, which is heat-pressed)
-If cooking food, use low temperatures in general - steam, boil, poach, cook in a low oven
-Avoid dairy foods - milk, cheese, butter
-Drink water, herb teas and green tea
-BE KIND TO YOURSELF!

Supplements that may assist:
-Milk Thistle: Supports the liver during the detox and aids in protecting liver cells., Many symptoms can occur when the Liver is 'congested', and can be very unpleasant.

-Aloe Vera Juice: Soothing and cleansing, aloe vera has been used for centuries to assist with not only burns, but also symptoms associated with IBS, and Crohns disease, and ulcers.

-Psyllium husk: Is the husk from plantain seeds, and taken in water, it reduces appetite, improves digestion and cleanses the system

-Chlorella: Is a green sea algae, related to Spirulina. Chlorella is the entire algae, whereas Chlorophyll is simply the green pigment. Chlorella is perfect for a heavy metal detox, and removes traces of arsenic, lead and also acts as an 'internal broom', sweeping away any toxins.

-Barley Grass: Suitable for Coeliacs, barley grass is the ultimate alkaliser. It helps to balance out the body, especially if you consume a highly acidic diet.

There is a tonne of info here for you to start with, and if you want to know more just ask!

My detox is starting right now :)

Begin the day with a fresh lemon, squeezed into some water YUM!

I have always been a huge advocate for Spirulina. And not just for Vegie Heads!

Everyone can benefit from this amazing green sea algae! It has approx 60% protein per 100gms, over 100 micro and macro nutrients, full of chlorella (for glowing hair, skin and eyes) and is used by athletes for energy and muscle recovery.

Check out this interesting article :

http://evelynfayenutrition.blogspot.com/2011/03/spirulina-natures-superfood.html

And check this out for MIND BLOWING!

 Did you know, Spirulina has:
300% more CALCIUM than whole milk
2300% more IRON than spinach
3900% more BETA CAROTENE than carrots
 375% more PROTEIN than tofu

Also:

I take about 20 Spirulina tablets a day; though it also comes in a powder form and capsule form. Any amount you take is better than none at all!

Give it a go, and begin to GLOW!!!!!

You would be SHOCKED at the amount of times I have been asked this question.

I was floored by the sheer amount of people who had no idea how easy and cheap it is
to eat healthy, vegie based foods.

You don't need a lot of 'fancy' foods. Most of it you can buy from your local health food store, market or supermarket.

My top tips:

-Buy fruit and vegies IN SEASON.

This is so easy to do, yet so many people are buying watermelons in winter, and buying mandarins in summer. The best way I have found to do this, is to buy your produce online at http://www.missorganic.com.au

At Miss Organic, they actually buy only what is fresh and in season. That means that in the long run, it is not only better quality, but it also saves you money- as you are not spending as much on fruit and vegies out of season.

-Buy grains and legumes in bulk and soak them!

This is a simple step that a lot of people forget. Before legumes and beans came in cans, THEY HAD TO BE SOAKED!

The night before I use them, I will put whatever bean I am cooking the next night in
fresh, purified water and a squeeze of lemon juice. When I am ready to cook, I simply rinse them and boil them until they are tender (cooking time depends on the legume).

I buy all of my grains and legumes from Discount Health Foods at South Melbourne Market :http://www.dhfoods.com.au

Thank you to everyone! I have had some really wonderful comments and emails from my followers- Australia and World wide.

It was a hectic few days building the website, however it was fun, eye-opening and gave me a great excuse to cook some more!

There will be many more recipes to come, and if there is anything you would
particularly like to see, please drop me a line.

Have a wonderful day wherever you are, lots of love from Charlie and I xxxx

I'm waiting for your email....

Vegie Head started as a goof. I love to cook, and love to eat fresh, healthy, vegetarian and vegan food. I have been a vegetarian for about 10 years and have been making the transition to veganism in the last year.

My husband bought me a big, expensive camera, and with no overseas holidays happening just yet, I decided to take some photos of my cooking.

They were uploaded onto my personal Facebook page, and what do you know- people were asking me for recipes. And more recipes. And more recipes. Until everyday I was planning what I was going to cook for not only myself and my husband (who, coincidentally is happy with vegemite on toast), but for all of my Facebook friends.

The hankering for healthy, tasty, fresh food continued, and the Tumblelog was born:
http://vegiehead1.tumblr.com

Worried that my 500 follower-strong blog was limited to Tumblr members only, the Facebook page was launched:
 http://www.facebook.com/vegiehead

And after that, the Wordpress blog:
http://vegiehead.wordpress.com/

Would you believe that this all happened in about 5 months?

The need for healthy, wholesome recipes is so strong, and sifting through site after site I found that so many Vegetarian and Vegan recipes called for Tofu or fake 'meats'. I am not a fan of either. You will not find a single tofu recipe here. And as for fake 'meat'....NOT A CHANCE!

I hope that you love the recipes, and the photos inspire you (not to mention, make you hungry!). I cook to enjoy, and I photograph it to inspire.

With love,

Adele AKA Vegie Head xxxx
